What is Humane Society?

Humane society is a kind of group that is aiming to stop animal or human suffering as a result of cruelty, abuse or any similar reasons. In various countries, the term is being used primarily for societies to prevent cruelty to animals. In the UK however, this can be a society that is also offering waterways rescue, recovery service or an award that’s given for saving a human life.

In the US, the first humane society was ASPCA or American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, founded by Henry Bergh in New York City in 1866. Then just after two years it was founded, the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or MSPCA was formed. As of the year 2012, Oregon Humane Society has adopted the biggest percentage of animals in the United States nationally with a save rate of 98 percent and adoption rate of 97 percent with roughly 11000 adoptions per year.

As for the Humane Societies that are operating in the US, they are all independent of similarly named national organizations like for example, the ASPCA or American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the HSUS or Humane Society of the United States. While these local groups are mostly about adoption, proper sheltering and euthanasia of the animals, national organizations on the other hand are focused most on addressing and coordinating the much bigger problems that are beyond the scope or resources of independent smaller groups.

As a matter of fact, Humane Society of the United States doesn’t operate, fund or control local groups. On the other hand, what they do is support grants, standards of care, train animal care personnel and also, evaluation services. In addition to that, HSUS work frequently with shelters in big scale animal rescues and disaster operations, you can also see them assisting triage, transport and car of animals rescued, evaluation and so forth. HSUS is also providing national promotion of animal adoptions and shelters, either in partnership to other animal protection charities or alone.

Back in 1994, Chronicle of Philanthropy which is an industry publication has released the results of the biggest study of non-profit and charitable organization credibility and popularity. According to the studies, the Humane Society of the United States is currently at the 6th spot being the most popular non-profit group in America out of over 100 charities.

Truth is, some local humane society shelters that are in operation are deemed to be No Kill. This is frequently defined as a shelter to which the animals are just euthanized when they’re considered to be unadoptable either because it has behavioral problems that can’t be resolved or is suffering from untreatable medical condition.
